The Zero Build mode changed the face of what players envisioned Fortnite to be. For a while now, Fortnite has been a builder’s dream, but the inclusion of Zero Build meant that players could return to the pure battle-royale days of Fortnite for a change in perspective. Fortnite’s next big addition might take the idea of a change in perspective more literally as Epic seems to be working on a first-person camera for the battle-royale sensation.

The concept was first leaked by @HYPEX, a prominent Fortnite Twitter user known for teasing Zero Build before it was released. In his tweet, HYPEX states ‘This update Epic began working on some stuff about first-person camera mode, but there’s no other info about it at the moment as it looks like it’s still in early development. Would work REALLY well for the Zero Build Modes.’ HYPEX also included a screenshot of what a first-person camera view would look like within the context of Fortnite.

A first-person perspective wouldn’t be too controversial in Fortnite. The game has flirted with the idea a few times, most notably with regard to the aiming animation and camera shift when using a sniper rifle or another long-range weapon. The best and closest example of a true first-person view thus far is the MK-Seven Assault Rifle that was debuted as part of the Season 1, Chapter 3 release. If the island should get a true first-person camera mode, this is most likely what it would look like.

It would be a definite benefit to add in a new perspective, quite literally. Fortnite seems to be fond of giving players as many ways to play the game as possible. We need only look at the various collaborations and new loot as well as the new Zero Build game mode as evidence of this. Being able to potentially switch from the regular camera view into a true first-person camera mode would greatly impact how we play Zero Build games and could lead the game to appeal to even more players, such as those who primarily enjoy FPS shooters.

In other Fortnite news, Epic plans to launch Fortnite back into in-person competition! Covid-19 may have dashed plans for another World Cup event, but we seem to be getting back to normalcy now, and Fortnite players are sure to benefit!

I hail from the awe-inspiring beauty of South Africa. Born and raised in Pretoria, I've always had a deep interest in local history, particularly conflicts, architecture, and our country's rich past of being a plaything for European aristocracy. 'Tis an attempt at humor. My interest in history has since translated into hours at a time researching everything from the many reasons the Titanic sank (really, it's a wonder she ever left Belfast) to why Minecraft is such a feat of human technological accomplishment. I am an avid video gamer (Sims 4 definitely counts as video gaming, I checked) and particularly enjoy playing the part of a relatively benign overlord in Minecraft. I enjoy the diverse experiences gaming offers the player. Within the space of a few hours, a player can go from having a career as an interior decorator in Sims, to training as an archer under Niruin in Skyrim. I believe video games have so much more to teach humanity about community, kindness, and loyalty, and I enjoy the opportunity to bring concepts of the like into literary pieces.
